Recess. the different definitions.

dictionary.com – a period of time when the proceedings of a parliament, committee, court of law, or other official body are temporarily suspended

wiktionary.org – to take or declare a break

Melissa Boyer – a 10-minute moment of the day to supervise kids releasing their energy to better learn throughout the rest of the day

LPA 1st grader – a 10-minute moment of the day to chase and tackle Ms. Boyer.

***

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at Legacy Preparatory Academy see 3 recesses: morning, lunch, and afternoon. The bitter cold has effected the kids desire to be out in the cold for more than 5 minutes, let alone 10 whole blessed minutes of freedom. But when an adult is out there who has no other desire but to reach back into time, becoming a first-grader herself for 10 minutes, the ability to stay warm is made simple.

***

I walk outside – unsure if this recess will bring any kid near me. But as soon as I find a seat on the wooden bench, I am surrounded with kids taunting me to come and chase them – to run and heighten my body temperature, to make the cold more bearable. And so I believe that the next 10 minutes of my life will consist of a harmless game of tag – me being it. I no sooner get up and start chasing after one of the 77 first-graders, when I realize immediately that I, myself, am being chased by 30 first-graders. My speed quickens – keeping the cold at bay. I catch the one chased first-grader, and before the group topples on to me, I have time to swing that unexpected first-grader around and around in the air.

But no sooner than I have put the One down, the wind is blown out of me as I brace myself against the thirty who tackle into me, desperately trying not to fall down into the soft, muddy winter earth, at no avail.

What then occurs is something one has only seen on – cartoons, or the Mask of Zorro. Those 30 seven-year-olders tackle me to the ground and pile upon each other to make my escape impossible! But little do they realize that the only things that they are ALL on top of are my feet. I quickly slide out of that hilarious predicament – and laugh to see them all on top of each other! But the laugh is short-lived as I realize that they noticed that I am no longer under them – their captive has freed herself. So I grab my shoe that had been pulled off, and start sprinting away, temporarily forgetting that the ground is moist after the light rain and snow. My memory comes rushing back into focus as my socked foot lands in the soft mud and the feeling shoots up my spine. Due to that impediment, I am soon tackled again by 30 little people – sending All of me down into the spongy, moist earth. My clean pants are now again in need of a washing.

All of us are laughing and you hear multiple renditions of: ““Get off her.” “Ah, you got me.” “Get her.”” from all voices – but then we hear “10,9,8…” being chanted off in the distance – and I see FREEDOM! It’s time to line up to go back into the world of books, teachers, pencils, and ‘hugs&bubbles’.

***

Recess - a period of time when the proceedings of an organized school system are suspended to become a kid again.

It’s worth all of the mud and grass stains, and the like-allergic reaction I receive to the wood chips spread across the playground.

***

Life is good when you can be a kid.

the Wedding: the Cruel and Unusual Punishment

... that we voluntarily choose to put ourselves through. It's self-inflicted unconstitutionality!

Now you might be wondering where all of this came from. Let me explain - I just went to my cousin's wedding this afternoon.
But before we move on, a tangent must occur. He is too young to be getting married! I mean every single one of my acquaintances is too young to be married- but most of them are. I mean, really guys, aren't we still just little kids? Where did we get the grand ideas to actually legalize our house-playing? During the ceremony today, I realized that the last time that my cousin and I spent more than 5 minutes in actual conversation, was 3.5 years ago and we were both 19. When did he become 22 and I, 23?

... Well, I guess if we really are that old, he is old enough to tie the knot. Odd - how time flies. Anyways, tangent over, moving on.

So you must be wondering how I could even think that a wedding, that day the female race looks toward in giddy anticipation - planning down to the minute, years in advance - sometimes slowing down through the diamond displays they so easily set in our paths at department stores - and lazily wandering onto wedding dress websites - how could I possibly accuse that well-thought-out and-looked-towards-day to be CRUEL and UNUSUAL punishment?

Well let's just look at it on the side of the girl that looks at all her married friends and realizes that really, the road of her Life has actually reached the marriage square - but where is her groom?

So it simply is....

Cruel and unusual punishment - to thrust all that romance, the giddiness, the sparkle in the eyes, the speeches given by ecstatic loved ones, the tinkling of glasses which is followed by the mandatory couple-kiss, the well-chosen colors, the Dress, the men in excellent attire, the mood music, the flowers, the electrifying amazingly RIGHT-feeling atmosphere - to thrust all of THAT upon a vulnerable young girl of 23 who is ready for her own fairy tale - her own Prince with which to ride away into the sunset, to kiss deeply after the Man says - you may kiss the Bride. I mean, aren't I right?

This is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment.

But we, the female race, bring it upon ourselves by enthusiastic dreaming and star gazing. One day, we will be the married bystanders amidst the family and friends; some of who are enjoying themselves immensely and some that are punished by our giddiness and sparkle, unbeknownst to even themselves until they are way too deep into the oh-so-"perfect-fit"-feeling.

And that is why we choose to inflict this unconstitutional punishment (to witness a wedding) upon ourselves- because ONE DAY it will be us.

The Nose Hurts

So I have been suffering from the Common Cold - the one disease that has no cure for about a week. A week!! There is no cure but for some odd reason we think that there is and we buy loads of medicine to cover up the symptoms. In reality - the symptoms might be covered up but the runny, red nose will always come. It's super rude. And not treatable.

And I look like a female Rudolph.

Homecoming Words

The following is my homecoming talk - and before any or all of you think that I am super proud of myself - I am posting this for all those who actually asked me for a copy but due to extreme continued emotions from that day to the present, I have forgotten specific names - so here it is.

Once upon a time in a land far far away named Albania there was a missionary named Motra Boyer - Sister Boyer for all those english speakers out there - and her companion, Motra Bentli. These Motras were sitting in bed about to go to sleep when the lights turned on in both of their heads and the story of the brother of Jared was dissected. i will never look at this story the same again!

In the book of Ether the jaredites are sent across the ocean to the Promised land. The Brother of jared built some boats and we all know the story. These boats, guided and directed by the Lord, were not on a pleasure cruise though.

Ether chapter 6: verses 6-10 read: " And it came to pass that they were many times buried in the depths of the sea, because of the mountain waves which broke upon them, and also the great and terrible tempests which were caused by the fierceness of the wind. And it came to pass that when they were buried in the deep there was no water that could hurt them, their vessels being tight like unto a dish, and also they were tight like unto the ark of Noah; therefore when they were encompassed about by many waters they did cry unto the Lord, and he did bring them forth again up on the top of the waters. and it came to pass that the \wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; and thus they were driven forth before the wind. and they did sing praises unto the Lord; yea, the brother of Jared did sing praises unto the Lord, and he did thank and praise the Lord all the day long; and when the night came, they did not cease to praise the Lord. And thus they were driven forth; and no monster of the sea could break them. neither whale that could mar them; and they did have light continually, whether it was above the water or under the water." …."And they did land upon the shore of the promised land. and when they had set their feet upon the shores of the promised land they bowed themselves down upon the face of the land, and did humble themselves before the Lord, and did shed tears of joy before the Lord, because of the multitude of his tender mercies over them."

No matter the tossing, and the powers of the sea thrust upon them, they were driven forth continuously towards the promised land and eventually reached their destination. We - are these boats - as we depend upon the Lord for guidance and help in this life. We are headed towards a "promised land" but it isn't easy sailing. Adversity is a part of life - any study of the fall of adam and eve would teach us that. Without that first opposition of the adversary, adam and eve would never have eaten of the fruit and we would never be here. we would never be able to choose and thus we would never grow and learn. The important thing is not a matter of learning how to run away from adversity but a matter of learning how to love it!

In April 2009 General Conference Elder Pino stated: Living the gospel does not mean that we will everlastingly escape adversity. Rather, it means that we will be prepared to face and endure adversity more confidently. (Prill 09) Just as the jaredites continually called upon God faithfully as they were tossed upon the sea, the only true way to overcome adversity is to face it with faith!

And for this reason, Joseph Smith is my hero. His example in enduring opposition is one of the hope in a better world spoken of in Ether 12:4 which states "wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, … which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast always abounding in good works…" Joseph Smith's life was not an easy one. AND As he sat in one of his many dark and cold prison cells He called out, crying "O God where art thou?" (DeB 121) The Lord answered him, saying "And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee, if fierce winds become thine enemy, if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than He? Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever." This is the answer - the answer to the age-old question, how do we overcome adversity… in life, … as a missionary? We just endure with faith. This personal revelation strengthened Joseph Smith's resolve and his faith became unshaken.
The Lord continued further on saying, "My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; and then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes."

Adversity is only a small part of life- it's still a PART but only a small part and it is overcomable -- Especially if we use our faith in the Lord as an anchor in this sea of tribulation and trial.

Throughout my mission I felt as if I could make my own list of tribulation and trial, as if the Lord himself would say, " And if the lessactives drive you up a wall, if the illogical traditions of albania keep hearts closed, if no one and their mother wants to listen to you, cell phones don't answer to make appointments, if feelings of contentment, fear and a loss of hope try to break your courage to stand tall, if everyone sees you as a jehovah's witness and thus does not want to hear the message, and doors continue to not open and those that open are shut in your face - s'ka problem, no worries - The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever. My daughter, know thou that all these things shall give thee experience and shall be for thy good.

Adversity allows us to be stretched and to grow. It might hurt in the process but our purpose in this life is to grow and learn - therefore, we should not run away from the adversity but let it work on us and choose to work with it. As a missionary, adversity was a serious part of everyday life. How was it faced? With trust in God. it is through him and his help that helped me press on when all forces were combined up against me. With Heartwrenching prayer for more patience. As Ada Bitner once said: "remembering who i'm trying to be like." With overwhelming LOVE for the people. Throwing my heart over the fence and letting the rest follow. Just doing it! and Sometimes we had treat ourselves to bring the Party back.

Along the way, my mom would send me quotes and they enlightened me on how to overcome the hard times that didn't seem to have an end. One quote was from a man named Samuel Lillman and he stated: Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. One had to have enthusiasm in the work, especially those times when you didn't understand a word someone spoke to you - or you stood on the street for hours trying to talk to people about the Book of Mormon and no one had time. Enthusiasm for the work was key. But as President Hinckley states "I do not suggest that you simply put on rose-colored glasses to make the world look rosy. I ask, rather, that you look above and beyond the negative, the critical, the cynical, the doubtful, to the positive. " It wasn't just a matter of faking it till we made it but rather, a serious search for the truly positive amidst the overpowering negative which comes as you tract 2 or 3 apartment buildings and no one gives you a second - the positive in this situation is that not speaking to those who are uninterested gives you more time to seek out the elect - those who will listen to the message.

Serving in Albania was hard - learning the language, even harder (and happened only through the gift of tongues) and sometimes I just wanted to sit down and be done - sometimes self doubt and fear came pounding really hard at my door. But something that Helen Keller once said bolstered my resolve and allowed me to wake up every morning, get dressed and go to work. This is what she said: I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Overcoming adversity as a missionary came down to one thing and one thing only, a knowledge that God Himself called me to serve in Albania - He needed me there, and so I was there. Really, God just needed a willing instrument to do His own work - so I became that willing instrument and was there for Him to work miracles in the lives of Albanians! One of my favorite scriptures is DeB 123: verses 16 and 17 which reads "You know, brethren, that a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workdays with the wind and the waves. Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed." Thus the only true way to overcome adversity in any aspect of life is to cheerfully do all that lies in our power - and then stop and watch! And sometimes all that I could do was just put a smile on my face and make the world a better place.

As adversity is faced through faith in a loving God - He strengthens us for the facing of stronger trials And as Nefi states in 1 Nefi 1:20 "the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mightier even unto the power of deliverance." I can scarcely count the many mercies God placed in my path these last 18 months: from being able to communicate in albanian, to awesome companion after companion; from becoming part of the big hearted Albanian family to a little 12 year old boy named Roni. the Tender mercies had no end.

Through the trials that i had as a missionary my love for the Lord deepened as my heart and eyes were opened and I was blessed to see a little more of how much He loves each and everyone of His children. Because of working with the adversity and not running away from it - I love Albania and as the line of an excellent song says, it will be with me forever like a handprint on my heart.

Well the transfers began with "Unadulterated Loathing", but then something happened and the parting was HARD!

I truly do believe that people come into our lives for a reason. the last 3 months of my life taught me this. Sure the last 18 months taught me this lesson, but the last 3 months were incredibly accented with this knowledge. I left 1/3 Branches thinking that was it, i had met everyone that I would affect and that would affect me - but then, one by one, beginning with my insanely amazing companion - they touched me like a handprint on my heart! and I'll never be the same.

Motra Bentli this is all for you! --- Yes, dedication has occured. Paçi fat goca!

Time flies...

... even when you're not having fun!

It's been almost a month since my last post, and it's sad to report that not much has happened within that time. True, I did run into Jenni in American Fork and that was a blast. We went shopping for missionary clothes and she witnessed my insane shopping style. Uncertainty, buy, uncertainty, return. (all in the same hour, mind you.) Hopefully she still thinks I'm cool even if my shopping tendencies are a little on the strange side.

I have officially purchased all my missionary clothes... minus a pair of water-resistant boots and some undergarments. By the way, if anyone sees a pair of conservative, dark, water-resistant boots that look durable enough to walk in for 18 months let me know!  I could go for another short sleeve colored top but I think i will be okay. After all, I do have like 5 colored shorter-sleeved sweaters to wear. I think I have plenty of clothes. Give me six months and I'm pretty sure I'll feel differently!

I did go see Prince Caspian a fourth time and I have to say that it's a pretty excellent movie... almost "Lord of the Rings"-good material!  Lord of the Rings, that reminds me of something that happened in June.  My darling little sister borrowed my most amazing hardback copy of Lord of the Rings! Then she took a bath!  While the rest of us were in the living room, we hear a crash and a "Uh-oh". I didn't make the connection at first. Then Shelby my other wonderful little sister asked me if I realized what was in the bathroom with Laura. I walked up to the door and say, "Laura what happened?" Instantly, "Melissa, I'm sorry!" HA HA, my coveted copy of Lord of the Rings is now twice as large. I guess this teaches me not to covet my belongings!  It's okay, I still love my little sister! Just she better not get anywhere near my Chronicles of Narnia copy while I'm away. ;)

But all is good on the home front right now. I constantly hear that my friends I've gone to school with are getting married by the second and then what's weirder, being pregnant! That is awesome and I'm totally stoked for them, but I am totally psyched to be going to serve a mission in Albania for 18 months.

It still hasn't quite HIT me that I'm leaving and I wont be back for 18 months. Live will go one while I'm gone, but when I get back I'll expect everything to be the same. I know it wont be. It is a little hard to handle that my littlest sister will be driving and dating when I get home!  and Shelby will be attending college! and Travis will be flying Apache helicopters! and my Mom and Dad will almost have an empty house! and maybe Laura will be down in Tuachan! Crazy!!

But life goes on, I guess!!  It'll be awesome. The best part of me leaving is I'll finally be out of this rut I've been in since the first week of March! Hallelujah!

Ta ta for now!

Benadryl

It's been tested: marked drowsiness may occur with the use of Benadryl!

I slept most of the day today because of taking one Benadryl tablet. Not expecting to get very tired from one tablet, because I usually don't get drowsy with two. So most of the day I was zonked out. It's nine o'clock and I am eagerly waiting to get back into bed.

But today was the last day for me to sleep in. My friend and I are going to the gym at 6:00 a.m. This is good for multiple reasons. One, I will get into the habit of waking up again. Two, going to the gym will hopefully build up my stamina. Three, I'll feel better.

I still have a load to do before I leave in July. For instance, I still need to get my typhoid shot. But I am getting it on Friday the 13th. I also need to find a couple more shirts, a pair of shoes, a coat (but I think I have that covered), and some random essentials. I'm tired of shopping. This is a good thing, because for the next 18 months I wont have to really shop!  (Oh, I also need to finish applying to college and get that settled out!)

I bought a new scripture bag which is less bulky. BUT, there isn't a place for me to put my pencil and pen! Goodness gracious, what am I going to do!!

Random fact: I just watched Hook for the first time in ages. It was very entertaining. It was like watching it for the first time because I don't think I caught anything from it when it was littler. It was very interesting!

I also bought a portable CD player. Archaic, I know! There weren't that many options for me to choose from. But it will do its job nicely.

Yesterday I took my little little sister to a parking lot and let her try to drive my car. It was definitely an experience. My car probably aged a good ten years. ;) It's really weird to think that when I get back from Albania, she'll be driving and probably have her license. Weird!

But life is great! I still need to watch all of Star Wars, and the Lord of the Rings again. Seeing Prince Caspian again would be great but not really needed. I also need to go to the zoo and see the pretty animals.

But all will happen!!!

Love the Yamagata.
